children's eye examinations
Caring for young eyes from the very start
As parents, we all want the best for our children — their health, happiness, and wellbeing. Good eyesight plays a huge part in how children learn, play, and explore the world around them, which is why regular eye tests are so important.
You might be surprised to learn that around one in five children in the UK has an undiagnosed vision problem. Because children often don’t realise they’re seeing differently, these issues can go unnoticed — but they can have a real impact on learning and confidence.
Spotting the signs of vision problems
Sometimes, small changes in your child’s behaviour can signal that something isn’t quite right with their vision. Keep an eye out for:
- Sitting very close to the television or holding books too near their face
- Squinting or closing one eye to see better
- Rubbing their eyes frequently or complaining of headaches
- Struggling to focus at school or appearing unusually clumsy
If you’ve noticed any of these signs, it’s a good idea to book an eye examination for your child.

Regular eye tests for children
Even if your child isn’t showing symptoms, regular eye tests are the best way to make sure their eyes are healthy and their vision is developing as it should. Many vision issues are easily corrected if caught early, helping your child see clearly and feel confident in everything they do.
At Kirkham Optical & Hearing, our optometrists are experienced in caring for children of all ages. We make every appointment relaxed and friendly, explaining things in simple terms so your child feels comfortable throughout their visit.
Free NHS eye tests and glasses for children
If your child is under 16, or under 19 and in full-time education, they’re entitled to a free NHS eye examination. If they need glasses, they’ll also receive an NHS optical voucher, which covers the cost of lenses and contributes towards a stylish pair of children’s frames from our fun, colourful range.
